The 3 most important processes in any business depending on equipment to produce whatever it is they are selling are

· Operations

· Engineering

· Maintenance

Where ‘Operations’ of course is responsible for the daily production in the right quantities, with the expected quality and within appropriate cost,

Engineering is responsible for improvements and expansions,

and, last but certainly not least, Maintenance is there to assure availability of the equipment.

 

As easy as this may sound, the reality we often find is somewhat different. In many cases we find ‘Brick Walls’ between the 3 major processes instead of well defined interfaces and a cooperative mindset.

It is amazing to experience the amount of issues in the organization inflicted by a lack of coordination, cooperation and teamwork between these processes. There is a lot of evidence out there about disasters and financial debacles resulting from it.

That of course is an unacceptable situation. The ‘lost opportunity’ in renowned companies allowing these behaviors in their ranks are phenomenal. And what amazes us most, is that they often are not even aware of it. Or worse...they don’t even care. Research performed at the Delft University in The Netherlands proved: “The ‘richer’ a company, the poorer the performance of their equipment”. And still today we find evidence of the same. We are not stating however that such behavior is purposely portrayed. The most common cause we find is, as strange as it may sound, a status of ’organizational ignorance’. A status that has grown into the organization over the course of years, where top-, senior and first-line management has somehow become oblivious of the fact that some of the basic structures behind their processes are absent.  They are caught in a web of financial challenges, market opportunities, rules and regulations, policies, procedures and systems taking away their focus on what really matters…..producing against target, with high reliable equipment, with a skilled team having fun in what they are doing.
