The Human Touch in a ‘Hard Environment’

Like in a rolling mill, reliable, efficient and effective operations is driven by the two main technical processes. Without correctly designed and configured equipment within the boundaries of acceptable budgets it is impossible to achieve targets. But once the equipment is there, it is inevitable to ensure that they are properly maintained throughout the expected lifetime in order the remain highly efficient and effective.

Those who look carefully will also see another important feature. The Engineering process and the Maintenance process form a lemniscate.

You will recognize the symbol that is used to indicate infinity in mathematics. Because that is how both processes should be treated. An infinite cooperation of people in order to improve, expand and maintain the production process. Hence making better and more products within the confinement of both the investor as well as the consumer budgets.

That requires a highly integrated way of thinking, behaving and working throughout the whole organization.

Meticulous planning and scheduling is a necessity to make sure that all tasks are lined up in such a way that disturbances are avoided. This also requires a thorough understanding of business processes and there interfaces on all levels. A reason the more why we have learned to center our approach around the human beings in the organization. Education and training of principles and attitudes on all levels and establishing a direct form of feedback about behaviors has proven to be a key success factor in any change for the better.

The other side we have also often witnessed. When the human being is discarded, when he or she is not listened too or is not actively involved in our programs any attempt to change for the better is prone to failure.  That is why we have learned to integrate them in our approach as part of the solution and not to treat them as ‘part of the problem’.

We have experienced how a straightforward and direct feedback on results combined with a proper amount of compassion proves to convince even the most cynical hardliners that the challenges ahead can be concurred and the ‘bottom-line’ improvements will be achieved. Perseverance pays off. And they have now become top performers.
